People move for a variety of different reasons. Some people move for the sake of a job opportunity, trying to move forward in their careers. Others move for educational purposes, moving to be closer to their universities as they pursue higher education. Many people move in order to be closer to family members, especially as older members of the family age and need more assistance.

For whatever reason they may have, many people find themselves moving farther distances — sometimes across state lines. According to Movebuddha.com, just 24.7% of all movers move 500 miles or more. Let's look into some of the top places people moved to in 2021.

1. Florida

Surprisingly to some, Florida was one of the top 10 states people moved to in 2021. This is in part because many of those moving were Gen X-ers who chose to retire early. Florida has historically been a hot spot for retirees, while also offering attractions such as theme parks and beaches.

2. South Carolina

A big reason why people moved to South Carolina is a lower cost of living. Most of the southern states in the U.S. are more affordable than northern states, and as people faced economic challenges in 2021, they moved south. Additionally, South Carolina has its own underrated beaches and is home to some of the rising vacation destinations in the country, among them Charleston.

3. Vermont

Vermont was the top state that had people contracting with
local moving companies in 2021. Why? For one thing, Vermont has a strong small business economy, perfect for those looking to strike out on its own. It also has a lot of smaller or mid-sized cities, which many people sought out due to concerns about crowding in light of the pandemic.

4. Oregon

Those that moved to the more expensive Pacific Northwest opted for Oregon over Washington state. Oregon has beautiful scenery that is difficult to find anywhere else in the country, with beautiful state parks. Furthermore, residents of cities like Portland have a high quality of life.
